Behold, I have found weird stuff at school. So what else is new.

This Tuesday I went to the opera. The music was okay and the story was okay (some dreadfully awkward text-setting), but what really got me excited was this:

I'm glad orchestra has started because I really need pencils. Yes, I do realize that only a crew member would have that thought.

I played in an alumni recital on Friday night, even though I am not yet an alum. It was a baroque concert and we did a Corelli sonata, Couperin's Apostheosis of Corelli and a new work based on a popular baroque dance form, the folia.

Yesterday I went to Billy Goat Hill with Maddy and Nick. We found three caches and a whole lot of other interesting items. I had forgotten how this city smells in summer - I mean the wildspace, not just city grime. It's different from Calgary. The vegetation is not the same and neither is the humidity.

This doesn't make sense on so many levels.

What be this strange creature??

Come to think of it, what be THIS strange creature???

I'm really getting tired of this meme.

Straight shot to Bernal Heights

Apparently this is called a "zunga" in Powell River slang.

Not a cache

We are so jealous....

Okay, read the second last regulation, then look at the next photo. Also..."Litering"???

Good job.

They're like foam inside!

I found a wand!!

ACCIO GEOCACHE!!

Do you get this? The ladder is going DOWN. Into the SEWER.

Whoa, the tri-force rock!

"Don't you just wanna sit there and, like, play the lute. And watch someone walking down the sidewalk. And when they reach you, you say, 'I've been waiting for you'...."

"Cool, it's like a mustache!"

"I think this is the most efficient way to go downhill."

The wild flamingo in his natural habitat

Strawberry-like fruits.... with orange goo inside......EW GROSS!!!

The "automated arrival times" at the bus stop are so funny I had to share.

On a side note.....Have you realized, I've learned to upload videos!! YAYYYYY!!!!

My last roommate moved in this week, and classes finally started. I decided to make a little diagram of our apartment. I drew this for my own personal consumption and wasn't originally intending to share it. I apologize for the messiness.

This semester I am taking World History with Dr Hohmann, as well as Beginning German (at last!) and Music History with a prof who is a fine musician I'm sure, but not a very fine speaker and extremely difficult to understand. Painful. Sigh. Oh well. At least I have finally learned to read neumes.

On Friday night I went busking with some colleagues, my first time busking in SF. We read Haydn and Mozart quartets until almost midnight and raised a substantial sum. At one point a couple of punk rock kids came up and tried to give us a hard time. Our cellist handled it well and they departed thinking we were cool. Phew.

On Saturday I went out with a new friend, one of the incoming freshmen. We went to the Fort Mason gardens, the Palace of Fine Arts and the Wave Organ. These are all familiar places to me (you may remember them from last year's blog), but I like revisiting beautiful spots, especially when I can show them to someone new. We saw the sun go down over the ocean and I even got to pick up a cache I missed last time I went to the Wave Organ.

I did not take too many pictures as I do not want to bore you with more pictures of places you have already seen (besides, I was busy being SOCIAL for once) but here are the ones I did take.

Tower in the sunset light

My apologies for the short, late blog post.

At Maddy's suggestion, I have named my cacti Guinevere and Winona. Sorry Al, but they're my cacti, not yours.

I went on a few small expeditions this week, one to the Mission, one to the Sunset and one to the Richmond.

Little cache - had to jump for it

Thought this was funny

Evil brick face

Kite over the ocean

Pretty ocean-front house row

I had to climb up this thing to get a cache on top.

There's such a thing?

Sunset on Sunset

The fire alarm went off at school on Thursday night. There were only a dozen or so kids in the building and we all filed out dutifully. Two fire trucks came and the firemen swaggered inside, laughing. They were not in there for very long. We were not sure if there was a real fire or if someone just thought it would be funny to pull the fire alarm. There were two trombonists who began practicing excerpts together outside. It was a surreal sight, trombone excerpts on the sidewalk, under the inky sky and the edgy breeze, their reverb bouncing off the buildings across the street. They started on Ride of the Valkyries as the trucks pulled away, which was fitting. One of them played a wrong note on the first try and the other stopped and berated him: "It's in major, you idiot!!"

3...2...1...Splashdown!!! We've been floating long enough, time to hit the current again. Early this week I moved into my new apartment, which I'm sharing with three other students, two guitarists and a singer. Here are some shots of the place.

My sleeping ledge with dissection table underneath (for the study of creatures and disposal of people that annoy me)

Looking down on the dorm!

Empty living room
I picked up a pair of cacti today at the farmers' market. Now I need to name them. Suggestions?

Yesterday I went on my first caching expedition of sophomore year: Telegraph Hill and North Beach. It was great to be back.

What exactly is the point of this?

Filbert steps

Kitty!

One cache (the end screws off)
Cache hidden
The gate goes to a tree?? Wut??

I love these balconies!

Any thoughts, guys?

I don't understand this at all.

Tiny sidewalk dragon

And that's all for now, folks.
